Giftedness
Students with exceptional potential and high performance capability in intellectual, academic, visual and performing arts who require educational progress or services beyond those typically provided.
The farther a child falls from the absolute norm of 100, the greater the need for special educational accommodations, regardless of whether the distance is on the left or right of average. Life success in terms of social adjustment, emotional maturity, and healthy self-concepts can be difficult for a gifted child.
Studies show that achievement in these areas depends to a great extent upon environmental support. For instance, it is difficult to have the intelligence of an adult and the emotions of a child in a childish body. The more a gifted child’s abilities differ from the norm, the more inhospitable becomes the educational program offered in the regular classroom.
